This is a response to Explorer 1085328. Being in Europe was absolutely awesome, but time really does go by so quickly. You do spend a lot of time on the coach so if you don’t feel like sleeping or looking out at the scenery I would recommend taking a few magazines- you won’t be able to find anything written in english once you are over there so it is a good investment.
Take comfortable shoes because you will be doing quite a bit of walking and pack atleast one set of ‘good’ clothes.
I wouldn’t bother taking a laptop because you can’t get internet at most of the hotels anyway. You will have freetime in each city you visit so you can always visit an internet cafe if you are desperate. I would invest in a hardshell lightweight suitcase because they keep your belongings protected and are easy to lug around- some hotels do not have lifts and some have very tiny lifts. It is easier to just carry suitcases up the stairs.
A security belt came in handy for me- especially good in Italy where there are a lot of thieves.
An adapter was also useful to have, but everyone else will have them too, so you could always borrow one. Borrowing is easy on tour because everyone becomes friends so quickly.
I wouldn’t worry about getting maps or learning languages because you tour manager will provide you with detailed maps and basic phrases as you go along.
Definately take a watch with you or hang around with someone who wears one because if you are not back at the coach when you are supposed to be they will leave without you.
I took my keycard and was able to use it pretty much everywhere I went. Some people did have trouble and either used travellers cheques or Credit Cards.
One last thing to do in London…..A BIG BUS TOUR. It takes you around London to all the major sights and gives you a history. Your ticket is valid for 24 hours and you are free to jump off and on as often as you like during those 24 hours. It is a bit pricey though at 22 pounds. It is not the cheapest, but I found it to be the best because you have a real person doing the tour and you are able to ask questions and joke around.
