The City So Nice, They Named It Twice!

New York is everything you ever thought it would be. Whatever you’ve seen in the movies, on TV, or in stories you’ve heard – they’re all true and to truly understand this town you must travel to New York and experience it for yourself.
Sure its population nearly doubles on a daily basis (to 13.5 million), and its skyscrapers indicate a city living in mid-air; sure its citizens are famously rude and its throngs of visitors only add to the overwhelming congestion; sure just crossing the street can be a life-affirming challenge and navigating the Subway system often reduces first-timers to tears. But that’s only the beginning!
After a visit to Times Square and the Empire State Building and Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue and Rockefeller Center and catching a show on Broadway and hanging out in the Village, with all the punks and hipsters, and shopping on Canal and SoHo and taking the ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty and having a stroll through Central Park, it will all become so clear: this is easily the world’s most classic city.
It is all things — ferocious, glamorous, sophisticated, a little rough around the edges, romantic. A modern-day Rome, for these times, for our times. There is no place else like it!

I did the Big Apple tour and loved it. New York is by far my Favourite City in the world. Problem is I wasnt there long enough. If you are going to go on this tour you need a couple of days after to have a ook at everything you missed. Its sucha ful on 3 days and even though I did a lot and saw a lot it was a bit of a blur and I also missed out on heaps. Definatel go see a broadway show. You can get cheap tickets on the day that you want to go Just ask your TM where the tickets are as I can not remember the name if it sorry. NYC is so easy to get around. If you cant or dont like the subway then there are Yellow Cabs evrywhere. Just stand out a bit wave your hand and a Yellow Cab will come.

You must go see a Broadway show. I went and saw ‘Hairspray’ (AWESOME!!!!!) and got my tix at the booth near the Marriot Marquee in Times Square. Purchased my tix 15min before curtain and got front row (tix was also 1/2 price). U cant get much better than that!!

MOMA is well worth a visit, and if you’re short on cash, has free entry between 4pm-8pm on Friday nights. It does get very crowded though…

Don’t forget to get tickets to a baseball game, Yankee Stadium is a favorite for most. But the Yankees and Mets are both getting new stadiums.

If you’re a sports nut you MUST get to an event at Madison Square Garden while you’re in New York. The US Open Tennis is great too.

In the Lower East Side of New York City, you’ll find a little-known Venezuelan restuarant, which has the best Arepas that I’ve ever had named the Caracas Arepas Bar. It’s a great place to eat after wandering downtown all day by foot.

If the weather permits, walk. New York is an amazing tactile experience. There is something new on every corner. The Subway is safe (in the daytime at least) and its fast, but I would recommend you stay on street level to really experience the city. Or if you are in a hurry, take the M1 bus down Fifth avenue

Recent Tips
A tip for people looking for a decent coffee shop.. if you don't already know about it, you will because most Contiki travellers find out about it - its The Grasshopper. Ask a local and they should be able to tell you where to find it.
When you do the wine tasting, definately buy a bottle (or two or three) of their Ice Wine. My dad has been in the wine, liqour, and spirits industry for 20 years and he said it was by far the best ice wine he has ever had! Enjoy!
Optionals like Group Dinners or Boat Cruises are often fun because they are as much about sharing an experience with your friends and having a night out as they are about sampling local cuisine or taking in the sights.
